A Brief History of Bulandshahr
Bulandshahr is an ancient city dating back to 1200 B.C. It has the closest proximity to the cities of Indraprastha and Hastinapur, which served as the capital during the reign of the Pandavas in Mahabharat. Ahar situated in the district of Bulandshahr became the prominent seat of power for the Pandavas after the fall of Hastinapur. Many years after the Pandavas, King Parma built a fort on the same location. Subsequently, a king of the Tomars built a different fort which was known by the name of Baran and the tomars recognized the new fort as the capital of Tomar kingdom. During the 12th century Baran had lost almost all of its power. Barbarian tribes of the Mughals were pillaging different regions of India, including Muhammad Ghauri who took over Baran in 1192. Since Baran was perched on a highland it came to be known as high city. Bulandshahr is a Persian word and it means “high city”.
The ancient ruins found at places Bhatora, Ghalibpur and Veerpur remind us of the antiquity of Bulandshahr. The city has ruins of medieval statues and objects of ancient temples. The Lucknow State Museum has archives of ancient objects such as coins, inscriptions, etc.
